Ambrose, for once, did not have the energy to think ahead on the gambits his mother could run. He moved pieces mechanically with one hand and ate mechanically with the other. Surveying the board at the end of their first match, Ambrose saw no other moves he could make. With a flick of his finger, he toppled his king.

Jane reset the board with deft fingers, swiftly moving the pieces back into their places. Ambrose stared at the squares of ebony and pine forming the checked surface, and fixated on a tiny imperfection on the square occupied by his queen-side rook. It was just slightly off kilter and did not fit in the same neat line as the rest of the row.
